Future secured.
Four-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a 14-year, $500-million extension, according to multiple media reports.
Per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, the deal comes with a full no-trade clause and has no deferrals, which makes it the second-highest AAV in MLB today at $35.7 million—trailing only Juan Soto’s 15-year, $765-million deal with the New York Mets at $51M AAV.
Player | Team | AAV |
Juan Soto | New York Mets | $51M |
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. | Toronto Blue Jays | $35.7M |
Mike Trout | Los Angeles Angels | $35.5M |
Mookie Betts | Los Angeles Dodgers | $30.4M |
Shohei Ohtani | Los Angeles Dodgers | $28.2M* |
*=After Deferrals
Guerrero Jr.’s extension is now the largest in Blue Jays franchise history, eclipsing George Springer’s six-year, $150-million contract.
The monumental deal ends the drawn-out saga between the slugger and Toronto, which reached its peak after Guerrero Jr. set a self-imposed negotiation deadline at the start of spring training. He made it clear he was ready to test free agency and listen to offers from all 30 MLB teams.
Despite the deadline, the Blue Jays made one last push in late March, but talks stalled after ESPN’s Buster Olney reported there was still a gap between the two sides.
Guerrero Jr. was an international signing in 2015 and made his MLB debut in April 2019 as the league’s No. 1 prospect. He finished as the American League MVP runner-up in 2021, losing out to Shohei Ohtani. Over seven seasons, Guerrero Jr. has compiled 160 home runs, 511 RBIs, and a 21.7 WAR.
The Blue Jays are set to begin a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox—one of the teams reportedly interested in Guerrero Jr. ahead of his potential 2025 free agency.
